Straight off of the SOFREP entertainment beat today, in news that is sure to enrage all of you out there who are sick and tired of seeing and hearing about U.S. Navy SEALs all throughout the media — excluding on this website, of course — it was reported on the cinema-focused website deadline.com recently that a new action movie centered around a group of Navy SEALs will be released on the Friday of Super Bowl weekend, February 3, 2017.

The film, entitled “Renegades,” and formerly called “The Lake,” has been in production for over a year, and tells the story of a group of Navy SEALs deployed to “war-torn Europe” (Serbia, according to a separate report), who discover a stash of gold at the bottom of a lake, worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

To help the local population, according to deadline.com, the group of SEALs “go rogue” (who doesn’t love when they do that?) and “engineer a heist to retrieve the gold and return it to its rightful owners in a race against the clock.”

This is, of course, one of only many recent films to feature Navy SEALs, not the least of which were “Lone Survivor” (based on the book by Marcus Luttrell) and “American Sniper” (based on the book by the late Chris Kyle).

The movie “Renegades” — the latest in the growing SEAL cinematic pantheon — is being directed by Steve Quale (“Into the Storm”), and features Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (“The Accountant” and “Whiplash”).  Simmons will reportedly feature in a smaller role (not as a leading star), portraying a salty SEAL Admiral who oversees the team of naval commandos.

The script was written by Luc Besson, one of the heads of EuropaCorp film studios, and Richard Wenk.  The latter wrote “The Equalizer,” which is a pretty badass Denzel Washington movie, in which Denzel lays colossal waste to a group of Russian mobsters.  Check that one out.

EuropaCorp is a Paris, France-based movie company that also released the “Taken” and “Transporter” franchises.  Its “Renegades” will reportedly feature characters such as one introspective SEAL looking to move on from the Teams, and another who is “mysterious.”  Who is not intrigued?  Not surprisingly, given the plot, the movie will also feature lots of underwater SCUBA work, according to deadline.com.

One thing can be assured this coming Super Bowl weekend of 2017: there will be some new Navy SEAL action on the big screen.  We shall see how it plays out, but if it is anything like “The Equalizer,” it should be pretty damned entertaining.
