Russian ambassador to Turkey shot, killed in art gallery in Ankara

Andrei Gennadiyevich Karlov, the Russian ambassador to Turkey was killed after a gunman began firing inside an art gallery in Ankara. In the video below, it appears he was shot in the left side of the chest. Andrei Gennadiyevich Karlov was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but has died of his injuries. The gunman has reportedly been killed as well. The gunman reportedly made statements prior to the shooting claiming this was revenge for Aleppo.

The ambassador, Andrei Karlov, was several minutes into a speech at the embassy-sponsored exhibition in the capital, Ankara, when a man wearing a suit and tie shouted “Allahu Akbar” and fired at least eight shots, according to an AP photographer in the audience. The attacker also said some words in Russian and smashed several of the photos hung for the exhibition.- AP

Turkish officials said the assassin entered the building claiming he was a police officer. Other bystanders alleged he shouted “Aleppo” when he shot Karlov, but the claims could not be immediately confirmed. The attacker was said to have first shot Karlov in the back, before ordering people to leave the room. He then reportedly shot a second time as he lay on the floor. Turkish special forces have surrounded the gallery, believing the attacker to still be inside.- The Guardian
