Kernan commanded SEAL Team 2 from 1994 to 1996, and served at the Naval Special Warfare Development Group from 1999 to 2003. His joint assignments include Deputy Director and Director of Operations at the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Director of Operations, Center for Special Operations, at the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). He assumed command of Naval Special Warfare Command in June 2007.
Kernan will not be the first SEAL to be tapped by the Trump administration for a position in the government. Former SEAL and Montana congressman Ryan Zinke is now the Secretary of the Interior, and former SEAL Admiral Robert S. “Bob” Harward was asked — and declined — to be the President’s National Security Adviser.
