On the morning of December 14, 2024, Fort Eisenhower, a U.S. Army installation near Augusta, Georgia, experienced a tragic incident resulting in the death of one individual. The base was promptly placed under lockdown as authorities responded to the situation. The lockdown was lifted approximately two hours later, and a suspect is currently in custody.

The incident occurred within the on-post housing area of Fort Eisenhower. The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is leading the investigation into this isolated event. Fort Eisenhower officials have emphasized their commitment to supporting the victim’s family and providing assistance to anyone affected by the tragedy.

Response to the Shooting

In response to the incident, the base issued an emergency alert on social media, instructing all personnel to execute lockdown procedures immediately. The alert stated: “LOCK DOWN! LOCK DOWN! Execute lockdown procedures for the installation immediately! If you are in danger, take appropriate action.” Approximately two hours later, an “all clear” was given, and normal operations resumed.

As a result of the incident, Fort Eisenhower canceled planned activities, including those related to the Army-Navy football game scheduled for that afternoon. The base’s public affairs officer and a spokesperson for the base’s medical center have not immediately returned phone calls seeking further information.

About Fort Eisenhower

Fort Eisenhower, previously known as Fort Gordon, is a prominent U.S. Army installation located southwest of Augusta, Georgia. The base was officially renamed on October 27, 2023, as part of an initiative to remove Confederate names from military installations. It now honors General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower for his exceptional military leadership, contributions to civil rights, and efforts toward desegregation.

The installation plays a critical role in the U.S. Army’s operations, serving as the home for several key military organizations. These include the United States Army Signal Corps, the United States Army Cyber Command, the Cyber Center of Excellence, and the Georgia Cryptologic Center (NSA Georgia). As a hub for communications, cybersecurity, and intelligence activities, Fort Eisenhower provides specialized training for Signal Corps military and civilian personnel. With over 16,000 service members and 13,500 civilian personnel, it is one of the largest U.S. Army installations in the world.

Fort Eisenhower’s mission includes Advanced Individual Training for Signal Corps specialties, signals intelligence operations, cybersecurity training, and communications systems management. These critical activities support the Army’s broader mission of ensuring operational readiness in the digital age.
