Back in my day, we faced enemies we could see. Today, the battleground has shifted to the invisible frontiers of cyberspace, with Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) leading the charge.
It’s like a revolution, a storm of change sweeping through journalism, content creation, and the sacred halls of information dissemination.
But hold your horses! Recent digs have mined a worrisome underbelly to this shiny new toy.
These AI juggernauts, like the famed ChatGPT, are spitting out misinformation like a drunk spews nonsense at the bar.
A recent study published via the journal arXiv threw a grenade into the party, revealing that these machines, as smart as they seem, can’t always tell fact from fiction.
In the Trenches of Truth and Lies
Researchers, like modern-day warriors, “composed over 1,200 statements,” DefenseOnereported, which ranged from cold, hard facts to balderdash.
And what did they find? ChatGPT, that marvel of the digital age, was nodding along with the lies, agreeing with falsehoods at a rate that would make any soldier’s blood boil.
At least 4.8 percent up to 26 percent agreement with the bogus, depending on what flavor of lie you’re serving.
The AI Revolution: A Double-Edged Sword

"AI today is unbelievably intelligent and then shockingly stupid."

And it gets murkier. These AI contraptions can’t even keep their stories straight.
Tweak a question slightly, and it’s like talking to a whole new beast.
“That’s part of the problem; for the GPT3 work, we were very surprised by just how small the changes were that might still allow for a different output,” said Dr. Daniel Brown, a sharp mind in this fight and a co-author of the study, told Defense One.
Unpredictability, thy name is AI.
The War Room’s Dilemma
This isn’t just academic banter, though.
When discussing national defense, misinformation isn’t just inconvenient—it’s dangerous.
With its Task Force Lima, the Pentagon is sweating bullets over how to deploy these AI tools safely.
They’re walking a tightrope, trying to harness the power without falling into the abyss of bias and deception.

The New York Times is up in arms against OpenAI, claiming they’ve been pilfering their articles.
It’s a mess, a tangled web of ethics and accountability that’s got everyone from suits to boots on the ground scratching their heads.
Charting a Safer Course
So, what’s the plan of attack?
Dr. Brown suggests we teach these AIs to show their work, citing sources like diligent students. And let’s not forget the human touch—double-checking the machine’s homework for any slips.
“Another concern might be that ‘personalized’ LLMs (Large language models) may well reinforce the biases in their training data […] if we’re both reading about the same conflict and our two LLMs tell the current news in a way [personalized] such that we’re both reading disinformation,” Brown noted.
Consistency is key; hammering it with similar questions to test its mettle is a good strategy.
OpenAI’s been scrambling to patch up their Frankenstein with new versions of ChatGPT, aiming to tighten the screws on accuracy and accountability.
But it’s a long road ahead, with more mines to defuse and pitfalls to avoid.
Balancing Act: Harnessing AI’s Might with a Moral Compass
In conclusion, we’re standing at the crossroads of a new era.
Generative Artificial Intelligence has the potential to be a powerful ally, but without a strict moral compass and a tight leash, it’s just as likely to turn into a Trojan Horse.
We need to navigate this minefield with eyes wide open, ensuring every step forward in AI is a step toward truth and ethical responsibility.
For us old dogs who’ve seen the face of real, flesh-and-blood adversaries, this new invisible enemy is a different kind of beast.
But one thing remains unchanged: the need for vigilance, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to the truth.
In this AI-driven world, let’s not lose sight of what we’re fighting for.
