Inside the Team Room: Brandon Webb’s ‘Why I Joined the Navy’ Story

At just 16, after an intense falling out with his father during their global sailing trip, Brandon found himself journeying alone from Tahiti back to California, where a chance encounter with two SEAL Team FIVE members set him on the path to becoming a Navy SEAL, a decision that shaped his entire life.

In this episode of SOFREP’s video series “The Team Room,” you’re in for a real treat. SOFREP founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief Brandon Webb talks about how he got his first job on a scuba diving boat as a 12-year-old, a self-described “Jacques Cousteau adventure.” By the age of 15, he had almost a thousand logged scuba dives. During one particularly harrowing dive at age 13, he recalls being awakened in the middle of the night to dive below the boat and free the anchor in shark-infested waters off the coast of California.  And you thought your childhood was tough.

At the age of 16, during an around-the-world sailing adventure with his family, he had a falling out with his father and had to make his way back home, alone, from Tahiti to return to working on boats in California while finishing high school. It was during that time that he met two men from SEAL Team FIVE. That was enough to plant the idea of becoming a SEAL in his head.

After high school, he joined the Navy, became a member of the fleet, and, after a couple of years, went to BUD/S.

The rest, as they say, is history.
