While the arrival of the first batch of F-16s on Ukrainian soil last week marks a significant milestone, military experts warn Kyiv “needs to continue efforts” to target Russian air defense systems in order to use the fighter jets effectively.

Targeting Russian Air Defenses Remains A Priority

According to a recent analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Ukrainian military will need to neutralize Russian air defense systems before it can effectively utilize Western-supplied aircraft.

Moscow has made it clear that the F-16s are high-value targets, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov offering rewards for their destruction and claiming they would have little combat value.

Other Russian figures, such as business mogul Sergey Shmotyev, also announced hefty rewards. Shmotyev offered “15 million rubles (approximately $169,000) for downing the first F-16 fighter jet, reported Anadolu Agency.

Many experts have previously stated that the F-16s will be an absolute target for both Russian air defenses and aircraft.

Ukraine Needs More F-16s To Become Effective

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged these challenges ahead, stating that the initial delivery of F-16s would be insufficient to repel the Russian invasion.

Our partners know that the number of F-16s we have in Ukraine, the number of pilots who have already been trained, is not enough,” Zelenskyy told reporters last Sunday, August 4.
