A Three Letter Agency Prepares to Attack Benghazi: A Definitive Report

A Three Letter Agency Prepares to Attack Benghazi
Just a quick but important update about the new ebook that Brandon and I released this week. Benghazi: The Definitive report has made quite a splash and I’ve been doing media for it all week, with both myself and my co-author scheduled to do some television appearances starting on Monday.

We both believe in this book and stand by it. We are also humbled by the tremendous support we’ve received from readers. We have been covered by both the left and right wing media, we have received both praise and scorn from the left and right wing media. I take this as a sign that we are doing something right. The reality about what happened in Benghazi does not fit into some pre-packaged corporate political ideology. The truth is not politically satisfying in anyway.

That said, I do want to comment on some of the grumbling going on behind the scenes. A spokesmen for the National Security Council has said the claim made in the book that the US Government has been facilitating the trafficking of weapons from Libya to Syria is false, a complete fabrication. The statement the NSC gave is technically correct but intrinsically wrong, that is the nature of plausible deniability. They can issue a statement like this because technically they are not the ones trafficking the weapons, but they know all about it and have approved the process. In regards to the JSOC operations that happened inside Libya, it has pretty much been radio silence aside from SOCOM making a statement that they don’t confirm or deny operations.

Meanwhile, in a certain Three Letter Agency, people are sharpening their knives. We’ve seen the crackdown on whistleblowers during this administration but in this case there really isn’t anything they can do to me and my co-author. We are out of the service now and are not writing about anything we did while we served. Like any good intelligence operation, we gathered open source reports, talked to our sources and put the puzzle together. We were never read in on any of these programs. Hell, I’ve never even held a Top Secret clearance. I got out of the Army before the paperwork could finished to be processed. Legally speaking, the spooks are out of luck. Benghazi: The Definitive Report falls under the category of journalism.

However, there is another avenue open to them: character assassination. How do you go about doing this? You could dig into our backgrounds using government databases, check out our military records, talk to some former team mates, that sort of thing. I can’t really imagine what they could find on me…alcohol and women? Big deal, welcome to the US Army folks! But they can fabricate or exaggerate certain claims and then have a few retired analysts or case officers strut their stuff in the media and try to discredit what we wrote. I’m not afraid of it, I just say, go ahead and mentally prepare for it now.

The sad thing is that this clique within the intelligence community could care less about any of the actual operations we discuss in the ebook, it is only the information about David Petraeus that concerns them. You see, that information hits a little close to home and could make some very senior people look very bad. Careers could be on the line and that is what really ruffles some feathers, national security be damned.

I am not trying to use scare tactics as some cheap gimmick to get people to go and buy the book, I don’t believe in that sort of thing. What I will ask is for you to rally around this book if you support this type of reporting and this style of journalism. Spread the word.

It is a brave new world out there in publishing and in journalism, a libertarian wild west type of model, but maybe a better one then simply having four or five corporations who have consolidated the entire news media under their umbrella. If you think it is important to hear from ordinary Americans, former Special Operations soldiers in this case, who do investigative work and then pass that information on to the public is a responsible manner, then please make your voice heard.

I’m writing this now to try to get ahead of the opposition’s decision-making process and stay a few steps ahead of them. If you support this book or this type of reporting then now is the time to say something. Speak out against digital censorship and let people know that you want the unvarnished truth, not some PR spin from the corporate media.

Thanks for reading and thanks for your support!

Jack and Brandon: I read your book and really enjoyed the frank truth you both put on this incident. I think the American public needs to know that what occurred was a retaliation and not spurned from some bogus demonstration. I believe that it was non-political reporting and people need to take notice. Thank you for bringing this to light!

FWIW, here's the review that I posted on Amazon.com:

"This is a riveting ebook that is a must-read for anyone interested in what happened at Benghazi. I'd be surprised if the story isn't adapted for the big screen. My only issue, and it's a major one, is that the ebook entirely lacks references. Considering some of the controversial claims made in the book, having the ability to review the authors' source material is essential. And for those parts that aren't reviewable, such as interviews with confidential sources, those should be identified as such. That's the only reason why I'm giving a 5-star effort only 3 stars. Trust nothing. Verify everything."

Both Jack and Brandon know the esteem that I hold them in along with their accomplishments here on SOFREP but the lack of verifiable references is a serious flaw in my opinion. The open source material is easy to reference, such as cables sourced from Wikileaks. The confidential interviews or insider discussions obviously cannot be sourced however the findings that originate from those sources should be identified as such (i.e., an unidentified intelligence official told the authors that ........"). That way when criticism starts to flow in, the book can be defended by others besides the authors because we can go to the source material and refute the criticism in a methodical and substantive way. As it stands, it's impossible to know what material came from verifiable sources, what material came from insider sources, and what material came from the authors' own experience in knowing the parties involved as well as the TTPs of the GRS team, etc.

Brandon and Jack, I hope you know that despite the criticism which I hope was constructive, I'm in your corner.

@oldSquid  @jeffreycarr Squid- Whats so funny is a group gettin all up in Jacks Skirt, when in fact, I was minding my own business in the middle of NOWHERE at a Mexican Restaurant and a bro of a pal in that group (after one too many) walks up to me to chat. We've known each other along time. Still, this bro starts talking about how Patraeus is Hated on "the 7th Floor" by his own bodyguards and blah, blah, blah. I made a mental note then called my mother and said,' Heh-sos and so is shooting off his mouth. Maybe at the wedding in Delaware next week-you could have someone tone down his rhetoric"? Mom agreed. Then, I read Jacks headline about Petraeus an his body guards. Now, the Mexican Restaurant wasn't the first time I heard this and Jacks book won't be the last. My point is, why go after Jack when your own boys are talkin? Just Sayin....

Also, a few of us were wondering why the publisher was lax on editing final copy which should have been due course.  Shows William Morrow as publisher (sold by Harper Collins).  It's apparent we all feel we have a dog in this fight and are supporting you in whatever way we can right down to the last bloody knuckle.  Are ya feelin' the love, Jack?

Some have taken exception because it goes against the narrative. The anger directed at you may also be because "they" want to know who you talked to so they can shut them up - or punish them.As this house of cards begins to fall, other sources will come out of the woodwork. Investigations have a way of snowballing.

You and Brandon are doing well... protect your sources, and others may come forward because they will see they can trust you.

@Old PH2 I've used anonymous sources as well. There's nothing wrong with that. My point is simply to identify which material comes from anonymous sources, which material comes from the author's experience, and which material can be attributed to named sources. If you don't do that, it's almost impossible to defend your work against criticism or prove your allegations.

There's more to this story involving e-mails in the background and Atrium wasn't his first nick, he just created a new account under that and we tag and bag his ass when he pops up.

We all have a good hook on what happened in Benghazi.  It was the goddam fail whale from word go.  But Ty and Glen and the other (unnamed) guys brought the heat and kept it from being any worse.  And we will remember and love them.  But it's done.

I guess it's a case of how we deal with it.  We know who fucked it up, but we don't have a time machine and that wont bring them back, so you press.  No one in DC is going to stand up and take accountability.  They're cowards, just vile little self-serving creatures.  But we knew that.  Can't tell me you were shocked by Billary's testimony.  They've never hauled 200 hand lines of irrigation pipe at 0400 prior to two-a-day football practices.  They've never ridden a fence line or branded cattle.  Never worked at a gas station repairing tires, never drove a combine, never had a party at a river with all the girls on a Saturday night.  Never shoveled tons of horse and cow shit out of a barn.  Never had to pull a sick cow or horse up and stay with them in the freezing rain, scritching their head and telling them "it'll be ok"

This makes an american man, an american warrior.

They're not Warriors, they're not American Warriors.  Including John fucking McClame.

I've put more blood and sweat in this soil than the whole host of them, as I'm sure many you have as well.

I've got friends and family who are still breathing who I need to take care of.  So we press.

That's it.

@Recon6  @StormR  @southernbelle  @Tango9  @HugeFan  @Kim  @engelbrad  6, I love the written word.  I love how writing transports me, nourishes me, teaches me, challenges me, captures me, guides me.  I have a personal relationship with the written word and so I'm a bit more demanding about it.  And when I was writing the newspaper column, I had an Editor who taught me about the 'business' of writing - it was one of the most painful, but valuable set of lessons I have ever had.  He was tough, a taskmaster and without even blinking, would rip apart something I had written that had cost me blood/sweat/tears - but he made me a better writer.  Writing has to grab the reader by the throat at the beginning and not let go until the end.  Simple words on a flat page have to invoke emotions and thoughtful consideration.  It's a connection that the author builds with the reader.  For once words, fail me..it goes back to building trust and confidence between the author and the reader and I just can't say it better than that...which is why you'll not be seeing no books from me :)   I do understand what you're saying and I'm not disagreeing with it.  Ultimately it is the subject that is important.  If the best writer in the world has nothing of value to say, then his/work is a failure.

@jeffreycarr  @Tango9  @HugeFan  @Kim l  @engelbrad Jeffrey, I find that puzzling.  I know that Brandon and Jack were talking with a publishing house about the book, but didn't realize they had actually signed with one.  Advance copies are routinely sent out prior to release and usually have a statement saying "uncorrected proof" on them.  But I'm very surprised that Harpers-Collins would release this one without a last clean-up.

@StormR @southernbelle @Tango9 @HugeFan @Kim @engelbrad Stormy, imo, that is not applicable. I am not eating the written material, I agree with the restaurant analogy however. This just reminds me of the ppl that find it necessary to correct a comment because of punctuation or lack thereof...I just read through such issues and look for the 'meat' of the thread which is what I deem essential to a better understanding, guess that applies just to me...6

@Recon6  @southernbelle  @StormR  @Tango9  @HugeFan  @Kim  @engelbrad 6, it's not that it affects the reading comprehension, but it does affect reader judgement of the piece, particularly in a work like this.  In the book Brandon and Jack are saying to the reader 'trust me' that what you are reading is true and solid and that we put a lot of effort into presenting a factual statement.  But if words are misspelled, grammar is poor or punctuation is inaccurate then the writing appears sloppy.  If the writing is sloppy, then the reader is less inclined to trust the author or believe in the content.  It's all about building credibility and trust in the work.  If you go to a restaurant and your silverware is dirty, even if the meal is great what you are going to remember is the dirty spoon and you will be wondering how much care they took in cooking your meal.

Exactly how I and I'm sure a majority of us here feel. He was taken from us without any chance of us being able to intercede. Folks who go after Jack and Brandon usually have an axe to grind because they're not towing some 'party line' or choosing the CNN or Fox take. SOFREP is all about using their connections to get as close to the truth of the matter when it comes to our military involvement abroad and at home. That threatens other people's livelihoods, so they start to come out of the shadows. We've seen it before.

@Tango9  @HugeFan  @Kim l  @engelbrad  T, what you've said about self-publishing is right on the mark, but...(yeah, there's a but), I do have a quibble about the book that has nothing to do with content.   Several of us here - and a few of the Amazon reviews - spoke to the typos in the book and that was a significant issue.  Self-publishing is also about policing yourselves.  You are not writing for your friends and families, you are speaking to a wide audience who is going to judge the work on its professionalism.  It was a rookie mistake for Brandon and Jack not to have invested the extra energy to insure that no 'errors' (meaning typos) jumped out at the reader.  The impression left with the reader is to question the exactness the authors used in the material.  Not fair, perhaps, but it is what it is.  As a hobby, I review books and the rise in self-publishing means I'm drowning in books and way behind in getting my reviews out.  The reviewers I work with are in the same situation.  And I can tell you that we will invest less effort and time in a book that starts off with glaring typos.  It doesn't matter how great the idea is - if it isn't told well and is unpolished, it starts off with bad marks from us.  There is a huge flood of self-published books out there, and more coming.  There are many books promoted as 'self-published', but in fact the author paid some publishing company to release the book - the publishing company doesn't care if its crap or not because they get their fee for releasing it, not based on sales.  There will be lots of books written about Benghazi and it was vital that Brandon and Jack get it out fast.  But it was also very important that they establish their credentials and reputation while doing so, and focusing on speed hurt them in this case.

@HugeFan  @StormR  @Kim l  @engelbrad To get it back to topic (good lord, that's a hike)... when people roll in here and trash Jack or Brandon for this book, they're missing a giant, obvious point.

These guys, both, I count as friends.  They're as different from each other as is conceivable.

They are in the money making business (aren't we all?), but they put their integrity on point every time.  Nothing I've seen from either of them in the time I've known them deviates from that.

I'm not a strap hanger.  I just met two good dudes who I support.  They write stuff at the pointy end of the military-jounalism spear.  Some will take exception to that, and specifically on this topic, I DO have a vested interest:  I was just getting to know Glen.  So I'm pissed he was stolen, but at the same time I'm ok with it because.... well.... shoot, he died a hero with his boots on in a pile of spent brass black on ammo. I should be so lucky.  We all gotta die and dammit if that wasn't some cowboy shit right there.

It's a new world.  Self publishing, out of the control of the MSM.  Some said that about blogging years ago but it's reached new heights.  Critical thinkers.  Thoughtful men and women are starting to pay attention.

Just because Jack and Brandon aren't "journalism majors" drives the journalism majors crazy.  So be it.

Send it.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer

No Kidding There I Was… Metallica Call to Prayer
