Reporter Kills Himself For Falsely Reporting On Spec Ops in N. Korea

The SOFREP editorial staff has heard unconfirmed reports that (name removed), a journalist, has committed suicide over his sloppy reporting regarding US Special Operations in North Korea.  He apparently hung himself and a supposed letter was left posted to his hotel room night stand that stated the following:

“I was too ashamed at my own bad reporting and could not go on living knowing that I had resorted to reporting a tabloid headline in order to attract readers attention and try and land more contract work for myself.  I’m ashamed of myself for not having enough common sense to do my homework on the Special Operations community.  I’ll admit that this is rampant in the international news media.  If I had done my research, I would have known that parachute operations into North Korea would be ridiculous from a military strategic perspective and have little return on investment. I encourage people to visit Soldier Systems.net and SOFREP.com for real information on the Military and the Special Operations community.” - (name removed)

The SOFREP staff encourages news media to use multiple credible military sources and read up on issues with regards to their military reporting in the future. After all, Special Forces is an Army term not meant for the USN, USMC, and USAF.

O.K. first, full disclosure. I have no personal or professional relationship with anyone on SOFREP, I do not represent SOFREP in any formal or even informal way. I am simply a guest here. I have no personal or professional connection to anyone involved in the news story we are talking about. After Brandon announced that he had spoken to Axe and was going to meet with him I send Brandon an email thru the "Comms" page. I told him that I took notice his remarks but that I still had something to say on this subject. I told him that my comments would not serve to smooth things over as he appeared to be inclined to do. I wrote that I would withhold these remarks, which I briefly outlined, if he thought they would do damage to that effort. This offer was made out of respect for Chief Webb and my desire to be a good guest here on SOFREP.com, which I joined in the prelease days being a reader of "Kit Up" on Military.com. Brandon most graciously replied that if my points were on topic and fairly made I was at liberty to express them. I've spent the couple of days since that time looking at the comments on this thread and on the web looking at Axe's writings on this subject and other reporting that has appeared. Mr. Axe will not like what I have to say here but if he takes a moment to reflect on my remarks he might actually learn something about the way his profession influences the attitudes of the public when it comes to journalism and its duty to the publc trust that it presumes itself to be serving. I now believe that what David Axe did was unintentional. I think it was an example of what sloppy journalism can do to effect international affairs in an adverse way. Mr. Axe has protested that Korea is not his beat or area of interest, perhaps he will refrain in the future from reporting authoritatively on things that are not his area of interest. For the sake of world peace? There was accurate reporting being done at that conference. Eric Beidel from National Defense Magazine was there and missed the part about parachuting Special Forces into North Korea when relating Gen. Tolley's remarks. http://www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=800 Paul McCleary from Defense News was also there and reported on Gen. Tolley's remarks about intelligence gathering problems in North Korea. McCleary didn't mention Special Ops guys dropping into North Korea. http://blogs.defensenews.com/sofic/2012/05/23/head-of-special-operations-in-korea-wants-better-intel/ Mr. Axe claims on his blog that both he and McCleary used the same notes in preparing their respective stories and that the notes they used were in fact Axe's. Mr Axe seems totally mystified at the reaction to his story. What is more he seems unable to grasp his own role in creating this controversy. His ethical confusion is displayed here on his own blog; http://www.warisboring.com/2012/05/28/context-of-the-korea-special-forces-story/ He offers defenses for himself that he "quoted" Gen. Tolley correctly but declines to answer queries as to whether he quoted Gen. Tolley in context. I made such an inquiry myself several days ago without any reply from Mr. Axe on this thread. I could "accurately" quote Mr Axe as saying; "I just don't want my 80-year-old grandfather" and report that he is estranged from some of his relatives but I would not be quoting him in context. To a certain extend Mr. Axe is hoping that the readers of SOFREP.com will not know the difference between an accurate quote and a quote in context. Well, I submit that we do and we're not easily swayed by weasle-worded attempts to blur such distinctions or feigned hurt over what his 80 year old grand father might find on the internet if he searched for him on Google. We are also unimpressed with Mr. Axe's cheerleaders piling on this thread without disclosing their relationship to their pal. It doesn't make Mr. Axe's position here any stronger. Personally, I think Mr. Axe is wasting his energy(and that of his friends) by making his protests of innocense here. Apparently Gen. Tolley has been reassigned. Mr. Axe views this as a victory for him and a vindication of his actions.. I think Mr. Axe is a fool to express that view. He burned a Brig Gen in Special Operations. Gen. Tolley has friends above his grade and below it. Men and women who will promote up the ranks into positions of greater authority in the future. What Mr. Axe fails to grasp is that he now has a reputation and its an unfavorable one to a lot of people in that community. Brandons suicide satire has a grain of real truth in it. Mr Axe may have committed professional suicide with his ethical confusion about accurate quotes being the same thing as quoting in context. The public and the military have been burned(literally) by people like Mr. Axe before. In 2005 a Newsweek story by Michael Isikoff and John Barry reported that guards at GITMO were flushing Korans down toilets to tweak the terrorists imprisoned there. This story caused riots that left at least 16 people dead including US citizens and military personnel. Hundreds more were injured and the story was used to recruit terorrists. It turns out the story was completely false. In early 2012 another story appeared that said that the US was burning Korans in A-Stan and again, riots resulted in the deaths of about 50 people including 4 US service members. Only later did we find out that the burning of these Korans was accidental and not done with the purpose of desecrating their book, which is actually burned or buried by muslims, though not in a trash heap. Mr. Axe, reporting out of context remarks by Gen. Tolley could have sparked a war. It's not as if the North Koreans are rational actors when it comes to their relationship with the outside world. There still may be violence as a result of this. North Korea routinely uses the slightest pretext for aggression against the South and the US. Our attempt to trim some trees in the DMZ once resulted in an American officer being murdered with an axe by North Korean soldiers. If the North Koreans do decide to lob some shells into South Korea or kill some Americans, Mr. Axe can add that to his repution as well. He ought to be concerned about his 80 year old grandfather googling a story about that.

@ACS    @SEANWe were never garisoned in Korea but we did go for Foal Eagle's, I found the ROKs especially the older ones very thankful for our sacrifice and prescence. They were very polite and hospitable, much better then a lot of other places regardless of how the press reflects there internal politics. They are a good friend and ally and I do feel for them sitting on that powder keg. I will forgive them the meals with cabbage and fish heads because they are a true friend of ours, they gave us KPOP and hot KAL Stewardesses in those powder blue unis.

@2B00 OHB You've got a bunch of things flat out wrong here. Mr. Axe describes himself as a "military correspondent." Which is to say, a journalist with a specific area of expertise. Jack Murphy does no such thing. No where in his bio does the word "journalist" or "correspondent" appear. Readers encountering the work of these two people would have different expectations about what frame of reference they were writing from. A Journalist is expected to relate "the facts" to his readers while a blogger and fiction writer like Jack is making opinion based commentary. It isn't the same thing and if you can't make that distinction yourself, it doesn't mean the distinction simply goes away. As for blaming the Koreans for lobbing shells rather than a provocation to do so, I probably can't clear up your confusion on that. But if the North Koreans annouinced their intention to invade the South on Monday, positioned their troops to attack and the US and South Korea launched a preemptive strike on Sunday you couldn't reasonably call the Americans and South Koreans the aggressors and blame them. As for the General's remarks. It is apparent that Tolley was answering a question put to him about deficiencies in US intelligence gathering capabilties in North Korea. He answered that question by stating that signal intelligence and satellites couldn't really detect what is buried underground. In order to gather that kind of intelligence troops would have be inserted with man-pack intel gathering equipment and comms gear. He then described how a mission like that might work. That is the context of his remarks. Any quote of his that fails to convey that context to the reader is therefore inaccurate and misleading. And that is what occured in this case. What General Tolley was trying to say to an audience of SOF insiders about how technology could aid in gathering intelligence in North Korea was lost in favor of an inaccurate and misleading quote that conveyed to the reader that the US was active in conducting clandestine insertions into the North. The real story was that we are very limited in what we actually know about North Korean nuclear capabilities and progess and that we lack the intel gathering capabilities to rectify that situation.

Its true there is a double standard, however the NOKs are bat shit crazy, the last guy, Dear Leader had an Elvis infatuation, and was in posession on nukes he always threatened to use. Anytime we did Foal Eagle it felt like war was just an hour away, the tension the ROKs deal with is crazy. Point is why inflame some burning embers. We all know about Unit 684, and we all know about the Norths infiltrations. Its a crazy place filled with tension. We have to tread lightly, Seoul isnt that far from the DMZ. Axe may or may not have been correct but sometimes journalistic prudence is more important then the big scoop.

@SEAN SPOONTS  As someone who has spoken in Mr. Axe's defence here, I am a bit confused about why exactly "relationship disclosure" is necessary. For the record, I had not even heard of Mr. Axe before this story. But what, exactly, would the suggested relationship be? I doubt Mr. Axe has that many family members or the money to pay people to comment or something like that. Does being a longtime reader of Mr. Axe (which again, I am personally not) somehow make one's comments suspect? Also I think that "context" does not mean what you think it means. The last defence of someone who has been quoted verbatim and still has a PR problem is to cry "out of context!". But if you read Mr. Axe's piece, the context is all there. If anything was lacking, it was follow-up. That's an entirely different beast.

As for comparison to the Qur'an flushing/burning stories--there is a world of difference. What Gen. Tolley said "in context" is that the US would like to have the capability--soon--to do the sort of mission he was describing. The only difference between that version and what Mr. Axe (reasonably to my mind) came away with is timing. Does your trigger-happy NK field commander see that as any less of a provocation? Frankly, I think this dust-up buries the lede, which is that the US is actively seeking military technology with the specific target of NK in mind. That may be an open secret, but for the General to say so in front of press strikes me as problematic on its own. That's very different from the difference between flushing Qur'ans and not flushing Qur'ans.

@Trin3 @BrandonWebb I added some of that fuel myself but it was done for a reason. A poster on that thread disclaimed a love triangle as motive but wouldn't say how he knew this. I was one of those who called the guy out to say what his connection was to the parties involved. In the end, he turned out to be a guy who did know both the victim and killer and his insight was pretty worthwhile in clearing up some of the facts.

@Old PH2 @2B00 OHB What? I was there when that story broke. What lumps? Jack Murphy doesn't bill himself as a journalist or "Military Correspondent" as Axe does. Murph did the right things on that story. He posted the links so readers could check out the story themselves, shared info he had gotten on a possible motive(infidelity) but that turning out not to be the motive didn't change the facts of the story or distort the context any. And when credible sources stated that a love triangle was not the probable motive, Murphy let things play out. It was offered as a "Developing" story which obviously meant all the facts were not out there. In the end, the commentators on that thread, many of whom knew both the Perp and Victim shed light on facts that had not been reported in the media. And it would appear that information on that thread may be of some help to authorities in their investigation. That's pretty good work in my opinion. Oh, and there was no danger of it causing an international incident that could get American servicemen killed. "2B00 OHB" ought to just disclose his relationship to Axe, before someone else does it for him.

Honestly Jack, even though you are not identifying yourself as one, you are acting as a responsible journalist.  Waiting for the whole Murder/ Triangle of death to play out before comment is responsible.

@2B00 OHB  @SEAN SPOONTS  Well, Jack, I'd put into the 'author' category where this Axe guy may be put into the 'blogger' category (don't know him or his work) his article did get published in a journal that should have known better.

While my sympathies go to _everyone_ involved in the SF family shooting, any harm Jack may have caused there is limited and personal in nature.  While the story that Axe put forward, with the same sloppiness, has a much larger collateral damage radius.

I guess you could say, 'cast not, the first stone' but you could also say 'learn to take a joke'..  In either case this thread really got a little more personal for everyone than it needed to.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
