Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Friday vowed that Iran will continue to build up its ballistic missile program and other capabilities, as it showed off its military hardware in defiance of U.S. criticism and rising tensions.
Iran unveiled a new ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads for up to 1,120 miles, according to state television. Iran also displayed other missiles, tanks and a submarine in a military parade marking the anniversary of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war.
“Whether you like it or not, we will strengthen our defense and military capabilities as deemed necessary for deterrence. Not just our missiles but also our land, air and maritime capabilities,” Mr. Rouhani said before the parade. “We won’t ask anybody’s permission to defend our people.”
