Istanbul nightclub attack on New Year’s Eve, 35 people killed and dozens wounded

Istanbul, TurkeyAccording to Governor Sahin, at least 35 people were killed and another 40 wounded in a terror attack on the popular Reina nightclub in Istanbul’s Ortakoy district. At least 500 people were inside the club at the time of the attack so casualty numbers may continue to climb as the night goes on.

A terrorist with a long-range weapon … brutally and savagely carried out this incident by firing bullets on innocent people who were there solely to celebrate the New Year and have fun,” said Sahin. –Reuters

Police outside the nightclub were fired upon as the attacker(s) entered. Authorities are currently uncertain as to the number of attackers. Some civilians are believed to have escaped the club by jumping into the waters of the Bosporus Strait.
