Last week, a video surfaced on the internet appearing to show a man jumping off a cruise ship while the vessel was docked in Nassau, Bahamas. The man in question, who identified himself as Nick Naydev, recently took to his YouTube account to explain why he did it, and what happened to him after he returned to shore.

“I had just woke up, we just got to Nassau, Bahamas, and I looked out my balcony. I saw all my friends taking pictures of the island,” Naydev said in the video. “I went outside and told them, ‘Hey, what if I jumped off the ship right now?’ Everybody got excited, they told me, ‘You should do it,’ and next thing you know I was jumping off the ship.”

After hitting the water, Naydev claims he was picked up by a passing small boat and returned to the dock, where officials from Royal Caribbean immediately detained him. Initially, ship security believed Naydev was suicidal and the jump a failed suicide attempt. However, they quickly discovered the stunt was nothing more than a misguided attempt to impress his friends, after which they expelled Naydev and the rest of the group, turning them over to local authorities.

“When the police came, surprisingly they thought the whole situation was kind of amusing, and they were laughing about the video, so they did not press any charges,” Naydev said in the video. “I was very, very fortunate about that.”

Naydev and his friends checked into a local hotel and were ordered to leave the island as soon as possible. After checking into the local Hilton (which Naydev described as “one of the worst hotels I have ever experienced”), the group hit the town and visited a few bars, where locals told him the water next to the dock was infested with sharks. The friends were able to fly back to the United States and eventually back home. According to a report from Fox News, Naydev has been banned for life from all Royal Caribbean vessels.

Naydev claims that he jumped from the 11th deck of the Royal Caribbean Oasis-class cruise ship Symphony of the Seas on Friday, January 11th, 2019. Symphony of the Seas entered service with Royal Caribbean in late 2018 and is, according to USA Today, “the largest cruise ship” in the world, featuring 18 decks. It is home-ported in Miami and routinely makes voyages to the Caribbean.
