‘A number of the missing Sailors’ from the USS Fitzgerald found dead in the flooded compartments

Yokosuka, Japan– The 7th Fleet released an update on the search for the seven sailors that went missing following the collision of the USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and a merchant ship have been found. According to the update, “a number of sailors” were discovered by divers in flooded berthing compartments that were damaged by the impact. None of the sailors were found alive. The 7th Fleet’s update did not confirm all of the bodies have been found. The sailors’ bodies are being transferred to Naval Hospital Yokosuka and once identified their next of kin will be notified. No further details are known at this time.
