Muqtada al Sadr supporters occupy the Green Zone again, some injuries reported

Protestors and Muqtada al Sadr supporters have breached the Green Zone and are occupying Iraqi government buildings again.  Security forces have fired tear gas and live rounds at the protestors, and 13 protestors are said to be injured.

After protesting for months, Muqtada al Sadr’s supporters breached the Green Zone last month in an effort to force Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to replace the cabinet members with ones with less political affiliation. The push for political reform is Sadr’s attempt to prevent more political corruption. Another grievance of Sadr is that the government is not doing enough to stop ISIS. Today’s protest and Green Zone breech could have been provoked by the multiple ISIS attacks on Shia neighborhoods this month, which killed over 150 and injured hundreds.
