Alexandria, Virginia- Rep. Steve Scalise, an aide, and two Capitol police officers were shot early Wednesday morning during practice for a charity baseball game. The shooting reportedly took place in the field dugout and the congressman was shot in the hip. Alexandria Police stated that a suspect is in custody following the shooting. The condition of those injured is unknown at this time. According to local news, witnesses stated that the suspect shot the congressman, aide, and police officers with a rifle. This is a developing story.
Update 9:29am EST- In a press conference, the Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown indicated that five people were shot in the incident. Alexandria Police responded within three minutes of receiving he call at 7:09 am EST. Alexandria Police as well as Capitol Police exchanged fire with the suspect.

Update 11:09am EST- Police have identified the shooter as James T. Hodgkinson (66) of Belleville, Ill. On social media, Hodgkinson was a Bernie Sanders supporter who spoke out against President Trump quite a bit. Hodgkinson also campaigned for Sen. Sanders in the past. He was shot by police and his condition is unknown at this time.
Rep. Roger Williams (R-Tex.) identified Zack Barth, a legislative correspondent as the aide injured in the shooting this morning.
Rep. Steve Scalise is reportedly out of surgery and doing well.
A visibly emotional McCarthy said that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is out of surgery and that he knows the two Capitol Police officers injured. He described them as “amazing individuals” who saved the lives of lawmakers.
“If you talk to the members who were there, they will tell you they went out into the fire to draw the fire,” McCarthy said. “The shooter was moving toward the dugout where the members were and they were able to take him down.”- Washington Post
Update 11:45am EST- President Trump announced that the shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, has died of his injuries.
