A soldier was arrested late Thursday morning after he allegedly fired two shots at the Campbell Army Airfield.

Army officials said the soldier, with the 101st Airborne Division, entered Hangar 8 around 11:30 a.m. before firing his weapon.

Installation law enforcement was notified and responded immediately. The soldier reportedly fled the hangar in his own private vehicle but was followed by officers.

According to authorities, the officer hit another vehicle during the chase but continued to his on-post home.

Once he arrived, he allegedly tried to run away but was taken into custody. The Army says additional weapons and ammunition were found inside his car.

No one was injured during the 30-minute ordeal. Gates were temporarily closed until the soldier was apprehended.

He remains in the custody of Army Criminal Investigative Division on Fort Campbell’s post.

“We consistently train for a myriad of situations and contingencies. This type training also extends to our civilian workforce so that they will also be ready to respond at any given time,” said Brigadier General Scott Brower, 101st Airborne Division acting senior commander.

“Today, that was tangibly demonstrated by our law enforcement officials, and workers within the incident scene,” Brower said. “The potential for tragedy was there, but due to the rapid response and readiness of everyone involved, a tragedy was successfully averted.”

A motive for the shooting is unknown, but the investigation is ongoing.
