Rangers Skull Stomp Terrorists in Kandahar

Sorry folks, nobody else brings to the table what the 75th Ranger Regiment does.  Not SF, not SEALs, not Delta.  Those units do great work, and each has their niche, but pound for pound the 75th has the most fight in them. Rangers are not surgical counter-terrorist operatives or maritime commandos, they are an Airborne […]

Book Review: Black Site by Dalton Fury

I had been looking forward to reading Dalton Fury’s first novel, Black Site, since it was first announced because I knew as a former Army Special Operations guy, and a writer of military fiction myself, that someone with Fury’s background was set up for a grand slam. There are a lot of writers in this […]

My Three Favorite (but obscure) War Movies

Everyone has seen Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down about twenty times each, both are outstanding films but no need to retread these one more time for the sake of redundancy.  Here are my top three favorite war movies that you’ve probably never heard of before: 9 Rota (9th Company) I just recently became […]

Changes to the Q-Course Part II: Dispelling a few rumors

I get a lot of kids looking to join the Army, as well as active duty soldiers, e-mailing me with their questions about Special Forces.  One of the rumors going around right now is that all Special Forces candidates graduate from HALO School and get an Associates degree as a part of their training.  This […]

Green Beret cleared in charges of smuggling C4

Prosecutors have formally dropped the charges against SFC Trey Scott Atwater after he was found to be carrying C4 explosives on an aircraft back in December.  Maybe the best part is that the explosives were found by TSA on the return flight after coming back from leave in Texas.  Ah, the illusion of security.  Thank […]

Brave New War: The Age of the Internet Ushers in the Age of the Merc

Today I’ve got something very special, an article written for Soldier of Fortune magazine where former Special Forces Officer Jim Morris interviews former Special Operation Aviation pilot, theorist, and innovator, John Robb.  I’ve been a follower of both of these men for a long time now and thought it was great to play the “fly […]

The Ranger Standard

It wasn’t until I left the Ranger Regiment to attend Special Forces training that I began to realize how highly respected the Regiment is, not just in the Special Operations community, but throughout the entire Army.  I spent some time thinking about why Rangers are held in such high esteem by their fellow soldiers. The […]

Invading Afghanistan with ODA 555: Part I

I’m proud to present to SOFREP readers this special interview with Scott Zastrow about his experiences with ODA 555 during the initial invasion of Afghanistan. Scott was an 18D (Special Forces Medic) on his Special Forces team, and was among the first boots on the ground in country on October 19, 2001. This will be […]

Special Forces, Winning the Hearts and Minds

Special Forces operate by building rapport with indigenous forces, creating long term relationships before conflicts even begin to take shape.  High-tech gizmos provide the flash for movies and video games but in reality it is the human element that determines so much of what actually happens where the rubber meets the asphalt.  To get a […]

What Brought Down 160th SOAR’s Stealth Black Hawk?

Bin Laden gets face-shot When the Osama Bin Laden raid went down, there was a flurry of news reporting, many initial reports stumbling over themselves as both the media and the White House struggled to get their stories straight.  Who executed the raid?  How was Bin Laden killed?  Who is Seal Team Six?  Our readers […]

So, who wants to go to Ranger School?

*Cricket-Cricket* Yeah, a lot of that going around apparently.  According to Ft. Benning’s newspaper, The Bayonet, Ranger School is struggling to fill its openings for Army Sergeants.  This is surprising, as Ranger School was essentially established to train Army NCOs in infantry tactics and leadership before sending them back to mother Army.  In this way, […]

Interview with former Delta Commander, Dalton Fury

Guns.com recently conducted an interview with former Delta Force commander Dalton Fury, who is also the author of the book Kill Bin Laden.  Dalton Fury (a pseudonym) also has a novel recently out called Black Site, which I’ve already pre-ordered and am very much looking forward to reading.  In the meantime, enjoy this interview from […]
