James Powell

About the author

was, until recently, an intelligence officer with the US government. During his time, Powell focused on full spectrum intelligence operations related to the Middle East, South America and Africa, as well as liaison duties with foreign and US intelligence partners. In a past life, Powell was a 10 year United States Marine, and also worked in the nuclear security industry. He currently holds a dual BA in History and Political Science, and despite being a world class IO, he failed miserably in his last mission to steal the secret recipe for KFC's 11 Herbs and Spices chicken. His posts are his own opinions and do NOT reflect those of, nor are they in any way endorsed by, the U.S. government.

Jade Helm: What It Is, What We Shouldn’t Make It Into

So it seems that two little words really can cause a stir. Presidential election, gun control, race relations. Then there is Jade Helm. While likely not burned into the memory of the average American, Jade Helm is more familiar to special operations and conventional military troops, as well as theorists (conspiracy and otherwise). According to […]

Corporate Espionage Meets National Intelligence

The CEO brought the group onto one of the colorful factory floors and turned toward them. Normally friendly and always wearing a smile, this time, his look was stern and he appeared circumspect. He swept his eyes over them before he spoke. “Now remember, no messing about. No touching, no tasting, no telling.” There was a […]

A Historical View of Intelligence Gathering (Pt. 5): The Great War

After the June 18, 1914 assassination of Austria’s Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie at the hand of a Serb nationalist, the coming conflict forced nations such as Germany, Russia, Britain, and France to honor treaties and mutual-protection agreements that had been made. By the time Austria-Hungary officially declared war on Serbia on July 28, […]

What If? The U.S. and a New Isolationist Policy

The election could go either way. The senator had a better-than-even shot at winning the presidency, but events on the other side of the globe could could sway votes as much if not more than the domestic issues that the Democratic politician campaigned for. Revolution was brewing in one nation and war was raging in […]

The Great Game: What’s the Price for Standing Up to the White House?

So it seems that yet another politician is being brought up on charges of corruption.  No surprise to anyone and the fact that the politician in question is none other than Senator Robert Menendez (D – NJ), whose 40 year political career has been littered with allegations of corruption, is likely no surprise either, especially […]

“Inside Spec Ops: The Polish GROM” Reviewed

I recently had a chance to view SOFREP.com’s exclusive visit, tour, and interviews with the men of the elite Polish counterterrorism unit, GROM. They are Poland’s equivalent to the U.S. Navy SEAL teams, and this was the first time that a U.S. film crew was invited to the unit’s compound in Poland to observe their […]

Word Play: The Life-and-Death Consequences of Word Choice, Labels, and Designations

Following the horrific murders of three Muslim North Carolina residents in mid-February, the Palestinian National Authority has condemned the attack as “terrorism” and requested that U.S. law enforcement allow its own investigators to participate in the case. The PA is not the only party labeling the murders as terror attacks and a hate crime. Multiple sources […]

“The Book of Honor” Reviewed

This is us, this is me, and this will soon be you. Each of you will research and report on one of the names in this book, and I am betting you that once you do, you will never forget them or why they are in here.

Wanted: ISIS Looking to Hire Oil Experts, Other Professionals

“The Engineer.” In Afghanistan and a few other Muslim countries, it is a term of respect afforded to men in positions of authority or specialty based on their past education. For anyone with an engineering background, and specifically with an oil background, well, old brother ISIS just might have a job for you. Recent reporting […]

Patriot Games: The Making and Unmaking of an Old-school Intelligence Handler

Author’s note: The following is a mix of author-generated hypothesis and researched fact, written to provide historic and modern intelligence operations parallels. I imagine that the conversation went something like this (with a lot of liberty taken here): Clerk: “Sir, there is someone here to see you. He says that you are expecting him, and that he […]

The Fish and the Sea: Community and the Terrorist Safe Haven

The Chinese leader and father of the Chinese Revolution, Mao ZeDong, when speaking on irregular warfare said, “The guerrilla must move amongst the people as a fish swims in the sea.” Recent events in France have come to reinforce that such an attack can come at any time, and that the attackers can and will use […]
