There are six geographic combatant commands or COCOMs, AFRICOM,CENTCOM, EUCOM, NORTHCOM, PACOM, SOUTHCOM. The plan is looking at closing the doors on SOUTHCOM (which is focused on everything south of Mexico and the Caribbean), AFRICOM (Africa) and moving Afghanistan/Pakistan to PACOM responsibility.

This would cut about 5,000 uniformed and civilian slots. Besides changing warplans and alignment of forces, the closing of COCOMs sends diplomatic messages (intended or not) to the regions involved as to their importance or emphasis in US policy.

We live in interesting times.
