On Monday, three Marines were killed by an improvised explosive device detonated near Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. A number of others were injured in the attack, although the Pentagon hasn’t released an official count related to the incident. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. A statement issued Tuesday by the Operation Resolute Support […]
When I was in Burma on my first trip, we had a guide leading us through the jungle who seemed to know every inch of the place. This was before my military experience, and I was fairly young and certainly dumb, but I did my best to follow all instructions laid out by light hearted, […]
According to multiple reports out of the region, the United States Embassy in Montenegro was attacked by a lone bomber late Wednesday night, who died in the effort. No other injuries have been reported. At approximately midnight local time, an unidentified man was seen throwing an explosive device over the wall of the U.S. embassy, […]
Bomb disposal experts from the Royal Navy transported a large, unexploded bomb down the River Thames on Monday night, then detonated it at sea. Airport security the world over has changed dramatically in the years since the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, particularly in nations with close ties to the United States like the […]

Marines, 18 Navy sailors, and 3 Army soldiers. 58 French peacekeepers and 6 civilians were also killed in the blast. Beirut is the capital of Lebanon, and the country’s largest city. Lebanon lies sandwiched between Syria to the […]
Last Saturday, a suspicious package was found in Middletown, Virginia. It was during a Civil War reenactment, where actors played both soldiers in the Confederate and the Union armies battling it out at Cedar Creek. The real battle took place at the same location on October 19th, 1864, where the Confederates unleashed a surprise attack […]
SYDNEY, Australia — The Australian police described on Friday an elaborate terrorist plot in which two men from Sydney tried to place an explosive supplied by the Islamic State on a flight last month, an operation that officials said was among “the most sophisticated plots that has ever been attempted on Australian soil.” The two […]
Our air traffic control system successfully monitors thousands of aircraft per day. Yet, no such system for monitoring drones exists, yet. And UAVs are not required to report their location, as aircraft does. Even so, drones are quickly becoming ubiquitous in our society, making it less likely for us to know if the flier has ill intentions, until it’s too late. A group of no-goodniks could easily fly an explosive-laden drone, or half a dozen of them, into an office building, a park, city square, or even a stadium full of spectators.
Using a robot to clear a hazard, from a Combat Engineer perspective, makes perfect sense. Why endanger further innocent lives for the sake of a bad guy?
You don’t have to be anything more than good with computers to get enough knowledge of chemistry to be able to create something of this type … from readily available materials, unfortunately.
Researchers at MIT and Princeton have built a new laser-powered terahertz spectroscopy system capable of detecting chemicals used in explosives. Terahertz spectroscopy is the measurement of electromagnetic radiation between the frequencies of microwaves and infrared. Scientists have long realized the radiation’s potential for bomb detection, but traditional terahertz spectroscopy systems are bulky and use lots […]
