Chris was a true patriot and an inspiration to Americans young and old. He epitomizes the bedrock values our nation was built upon. My condolences go out to his family and those with whom he served.

Chris and Eric's books both helped me in so many ways. Chris made me realize my decisions to leave service for my family weren't unique to me and made me understand my decisions better. The Adam Brown story made me more conscious of my faith and the impact God has had in my life and can continue to have.

Is it just me or is the kinda choppy?

@CalebMuibu I had that problem in bits. It might have been just the live connection at those times. Also maybe try loading the whole video. Leave it on pause and come back to watch it. I noticed when I did that it helped.

@HugeFan Yeah, had to step out about when they had technical problem.  Finally sat down and listened to the whole web cast.  Chris is the perfect guy to interview about the struggle many of us have with service.  Balance is so important, I only realized it just a few years ago.  Giving my time to my wife and girls is so much more important than any thing else I do.  But we're not taught that.  Takes some adjustment.

@notdrakebell  @HugeFan Yeah I noted a little.  They did have to stop at one point and restart.  Still a great interview, couple of regular guys, would have been something to know Adam Brown.

I was able to catch the whole thing - thanks SOFREP.

@Eric Blehm, "Fearless" has been sitting in my amazon cart for a couple month's now. Time to man up and check out!

@ Chris Kyle your brutal honesty and humility is very much appreciated and I have the utmost respect for that.

@StormR  @Tango9   Stormy, I know Fan lives in Oregon, not familiar with y'alls geographical areas, but that is closer than Florida!  He will monitor this and he may know someone/place between the two of you, at least until someone else closer shows up!  Just don't have him try to sell you a Sig, lol

I am a Glock fan, but then you Must read Brandon's post on his experiences with Glock-19' which is Exactly what I love.  Choice in firearms is like opinions, they go with the Individual.  You are going to have sooo much fun learning to shoot!

And guns are relatively cheap, at least dependable ones are.    R6

@Recon6  @Tango9   I'm in Western Washington, near Joint Base Lewis McChord.  The only shooting range I know of close to me is one I would most definitely not go too - horrible reputation and been in the newspapers a lot.   So even good recommendations for a teacher and range would be great.  Having a SOFREP person showing me would be amazing :) :)

@StormR I just thoroughly enjoyed the fact that Chris included his wife in his book, helped make it more than just some guy's war story.  That and the way he spoke about his impressions, stand out as unique.  This generation of men are not as internalized as past generations.  Much to our benefit.

Having Taya and Chris discuss the whole "God, Country, Family vs. God, Family, Country" issue was fascinating... Made me think and question my own view on that topic. Makes disagreements that me and my better 3/4s have seem trivial. They are obviously both strong leaders and deserve each other.

@StormR  @Old PH2 I haven't read Brandon's book yet, sorry BW, but I did read Chris's book and I thought it was great how open he was. From going through BUDS, to his experiences in the Teams, to dealing with service to country while trying to maintain a marriage and family life. I too thought that having his wife Taya write about her perspective was really original and brought out that personal level of the book even more. Excellent read all around. I'll have to add Fearless to my list as well.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
