How to Keep Your Home Safe

Tip 1: Securing Doors and Windows

Securing your doors and windows is the first step in preventing crime. Most homes have at least one door and two windows. The best way to keep your doors and windows secure is to install deadbolts and locks.

These locks should be able to stop burglars from entering your home. It’s also a good idea to replace the door and window locks every 15-20 years.

Another way to secure your windows is by installing bars on them. Bars can be purchased from your local hardware store and installed by a professional.

Security cameras and an alarm are both recommended. Many systems are extremely affordable and available online and instantly plug into the cloud.

Tip 2: Keeping Up With Maintenance

A lot of people neglect their maintenance. However, this can result in an increase in the crime rate in your neighborhood. Regular maintenance of your property will deter crime because burglars know that you are more likely to notice if something is out of the ordinary. It’s also important to keep your lawn tidy and well-maintained.

Tip 3: Add Lighting

Lighting will deter potential burglars because they prefer to work in the dark. Turn on lights in your house when you are not home, especially outside of your home. It’s also helpful to use lamps with timers on them.

What Are the Common Causes of Crime?

Crime is committed for a variety of reasons. The most common crime victims are people who live in areas with high poverty rates, low education levels, and high unemployment.

These are called “hot spots” for crime.

Sometimes, you are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. That’s why it’s important to be aware of your surroundings at all times. You should also take these precautions to lessen your risk of being a crime victim.

  • Install a home security system;
  • Set up lights outside your house;
  • Use a dog for home security. Dogs are a great deterrent;
  • Keep your doors and windows locked;
  • Don’t leave anything valuable outside your house — especially in plain sight;
  • Don’t hide spare keys under doormats or flower pots;
  • Lock your car doors.

The Best Ways to Prevent Crime

Outdoor security is very important. Don’t leave any valuables out in the open. If you need to leave your car and home unattended, make sure to remove items of value and lock up all doors and windows.

If you live in a residential area, make sure to arm your home with an alarm system. This will serve as a deterrent, and if a burglar does break into your home, the alarm system will sound and alert the police.

It’s also important to make sure that your walls and fences are well-lit. This will serve as an extra layer of protection.

If you want to be even safer, install cameras around your property. This will allow you to see what’s going on outside of your home without having to leave your house and most systems can be accessed while you’re away at the click of a button on your mobile phone.
