The Pic of the Day: ANZACs go over the top in Gallipoli

Australian/New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) troops go over the top and charge at a Turkish position during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. As the bloody stalemate of the Western Front was devastating both the Allied and German armies, First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill proposed the opening of a second front in the Balkans in an attempt to link up with the battered Russians and strangle the Central Powers to submission.

However, the Gallipoli Campaign quickly became a smaller version of the Western Front, as Allied and Turkish troops bled it out in the sands and hills of the Gallipoli Peninsula. It was during the fierce battles of the Campaign that the ANZAC troops won with their blood the admiration and respect of friend and foe alike.
