The face of confusion when balancing personal protection with public gun control policies.
Packing Heat While Pushing for Gun Control
Guess what I just found out today, dear reader?
I discovered that Kamala Harris, the 49th Vice President of the United States and long-time denouncer of all things firearms-related, owns a gun.
Kamala Harris owning a gun is a lot like a vegan owning a butcher shop…I just can’t wrap my brain around the concept.
But why, Kamala, why? After all, as Vice President of the United States, she and her family are protected night and day by (what used to be) one of the finest protective agencies in the world, the United States Secret Service. Do you think she heads out to the range on weekends to plink some targets and blow off a little steam? I doubt it.
For the record, she has stated that she owns a handgun “for probably the reason a lot of people do, for personal safety.” She told CNN that it had been “purchased years ago.” She further went on to say that it is kept securely locked up at her residence. The last I heard, her main residence was the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. Washington, DC, requires that all gun owners living there register their firearms. Therfore, Kamala’s gun is supposedly registered somewhere, but DC doesn’t let the public look at those records.
Why did I want to look at the records? Because she won’t tell us what kind of gun she owns. I wonder if she has taken a firearms safety course. If so, I wonder if it was an NRA approved instructor.
I wonder a lot about Kamala Harris because I don’t want to have my AR taken away. In the past, she’s advocated for a buyback of so-called “assault-style” weapons.

She’s been consistent in pushing for stronger gun control laws, yet the Vice President herself felt the need to arm up for personal safety. There’s a lot of irony in that, isn’t there? I mean, sure, owning a gun for protection is a right—and one she’s entitled to—but it becomes more than a little frustrating when the same person supports policies that would make it harder for everyday Americans to do the same.
Kamala Harris is no stranger to the idea of self-defense; as a former prosecutor and Attorney General of California, she’s seen firsthand what violence can do. But here’s the rub: while she exercises her right to personal protection, she also advocates for sweeping gun control measures that could infringe upon the rights of others. The message that sends is confusing at best and hypocritical at worst.
Do I believe that everyone should have the right to own a firearm for self-defense? Absolutely. But when leaders start talking about buybacks and stricter regulations, it raises questions about whose rights are prioritized. Harris owning a gun while pushing for laws that limit ownership for others only highlights the double standard. If it’s okay for her, why not for the rest of us?
The truth is Kamala Harris’s ownership of a firearm won’t change her stance on gun control. It does, however, provide a stark reminder that even those who advocate for limitations on our Second Amendment rights sometimes feel the need to exercise them. Ultimately, it begs the question: If Kamala Harris sees the value in owning a gun for personal protection, why can’t she extend that understanding to the rest of law-abiding Americans?
After all, personal safety is something we all value, not just those in Washington, DC.
