US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement yesterday, June 19th, stating that American forces had conducted an airstrike killing the terrorist leader. They note that no civilians were harmed in the strike.
Details on the operation are extremely limited at this time. We have been able to determine from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that the airstrike took place in Afrin, an area controlled by Turkey. Ankara may have coordinated with Washington on the attack, but at this point, that is solely speculation.

Let’s examine the situation more closely. The name al-Janabi belongs to an Iraqi ethnic tribe, Sunni Arabs. Many ISIS fighters in Syria are Iraqi. It is estimated that approximately 6,000 Iraqi families live at the al-Hol refugee camp in Northwest Syria. The camp is supposed to be run by the US-backed SDF, but in reality, ISIS has a stronghold there and uses the facility to recruit new members.
On Friday, June 14th, US State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller announced that the United States and Turkey had that day “imposed terrorist designations on three individuals with links to ISIS.”
He continued: “These designations are the result of close counterterrorism coordination “between the US and Turkey.” Al-Janabi was not one of the three named terrorists. Miller identified Adam Khamirzaev and two Uzbeki nationals. He referred to Khamirzaev as “the ISIS Georgia Province emir.”
