A US Embassy staffer in Jerusalem has passed away, as confirmed by embassy officials on Monday, March 5th. The employee was found dead in their apartment.
The deceased, an American national, was not the US Ambassador to Israel. Initial reports suggest that foul play is not suspected.
The embassy has released a limited statement confirming the death, merely saying that the incident is currently under investigation. Details remain scarce, pending notification of the employee’s family.
A US spokesman has said simply,
“We can confirm the death of an American employee of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. It is not the U.S. Ambassador. Foul play is not suspected. We have no further details to share.”
A US State Department spokesman said that more information will be released once the next of kin has been notified.
This incident has drawn attention amidst the backdrop of the significant move of the US embassy to Jerusalem in 2018, a decision that marked a pivotal shift in US foreign policy regarding Israel and Jerusalem‘s status.
Members of the Israeli police were not immediately available to answer questions.
