In a move making headlines across the nation, Dan Caldwell, a senior adviser to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, was escorted out of the Pentagon on Tuesday amid an ongoing investigation into unauthorized leaks of sensitive information. Caldwell, a Marine Corps veteran and influential figure within the Department of Defense, now finds himself at the center of a controversy that has sent shockwaves through Washington.

According to reports, Caldwell’s removal is part of a broader probe into leaks concerning military operational plans, including those related to the Panama Canal, a second carrier deployment to the Red Sea, and the suspension of intelligence collection efforts in Ukraine. The investigation gained momentum following a March 21 memo from Hegseth’s chief of staff, Joe Kasper, which called for a crackdown on unauthorized disclosures and even suggested the use of polygraph tests to identify the source of the leaks.

The Signal Chat Scandal

Central to the investigation is a Signal messaging group chat involving top Trump administration national security officials. The chat, intended for coordinating military actions against Houthi militants in Yemen, inadvertently included Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. This mishap led to the public revelation of sensitive operational details, including specific strike times and targets.

Caldwell was identified as the Department of Defense’s primary liaison in this chat, potentially implicating him in the leak investigation. While the White House has downplayed the severity of the disclosures, insisting that no classified information was shared, the incident has raised serious concerns about the handling of sensitive military operations.
