A local construction company in Galveston, Texas is preparing to start construction on a portion of the border wall at the beginning of next month. According to a press release from the Department of Defense (D0D), SLS Company (SLSCO) won a DoD contract valued at $166,835,700 in December for the design and construction of the Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) new “border infrastructure” program. Although CBP is part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and not the DoD, the Army Corps of Engineers is handling the contract.

Although SLSCO is based in Texas, the DoD says the work will be performed in “Tecate, California; San Diego, California; and Calexico, California.” SLSCO also won a similar contract valued at $145 million for similar work in McAllen, Texas in November of last year according to one report from NBC San Diego. McAllen sits on the north bank of the Rio Grande river, opposite the Mexican city of Reynosa.

If the two back-to-back contract awards are any indication, SLSCO might be poised to win additional contracts if President Trump can convince congressional Democrats to give up the estimated $5.7 billion needed to complete the entire southern border wall. SLSCO has a national footprint, with offices in Texas, Louisiana, New York, South Carolina, and outside of the U.S. in the Caribbean, according to the firm’s website. At the present time, SLSCO is privately held.

“It’ll be huge contracts, lots of money, and it’s going to take a while to do it; it’s going to take years to do this,” Command Consulting Group’s founding partner W. Ralph Basham said while speaking to The Street. Basham speaks from experience: Before founding Command Consulting Group he was the commissioner of the CBP from 2006 to 2009.

Despite SLSCO’s recent success in government bidding, other companies have landed border wall contracts as well. One report from The Street indicated that Granite Construction and Tetra Tech had won border wall contracts as early as May of last year. Both firms won DHS contracts bid through the Army Corps of Engineers and performed the work—which included both construction of new barriers and upgrading current fencing—in California.

Another company that has won similar contracts is Sundt, a construction company headquartered in Tempe, Arizona. The company also has offices in California, Texas, and Utah. According to The Street, the firm has won no less than 10 border fence contracts in the past.
