Check out the stick and throttle action (scroll down to see). It gives you a great idea of how much work it is to fly close formation. Constant movement of stick and throttle to stay in position and the close quarters makes this type of flying one of the most stressful things there is in aviation.
Also fun to watch the instruments moving as the formation meanders the sky.
