WASHINGTON — In the $600 billion annual Defense Department budgets, the $22 million spent on the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was almost impossible to find.
Which was how the Pentagon wanted it.
For years, the program investigated reports of unidentified flying objects, according to Defense Department officials, interviews with program participants and records obtained by The New York Times. It was run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagon’s C Ring, deep within the building’s maze.
The Defense Department has never before acknowledged the existence of the program, which it says it shut down in 2012. But its backers say that, while the Pentagon ended funding for the effort at that time, the program remains in existence. For the past five years, they say, officials with the program have continued to investigate episodes brought to them by service members, while also carrying out their other Defense Department duties.
The shadowy program — parts of it remain classified — began in 2007, and initially it was largely funded at the request of Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat who was the Senate majority leader at the time and who has long had an interest in space phenomena. Most of the money went to an aerospace research company run by a billionaire entrepreneur and longtime friend of Mr. Reid’s, Robert Bigelow, who is currently working with NASA to produce expandable craft for humans to use in space.
On CBS’s “60 Minutes” in May, Mr. Bigelow said he was “absolutely convinced” that aliens exist and that U.F.O.s have visited Earth.”

BREMERTON — Two Bremerton police officers are in the hospital with gunshot wounds after a 53-year-old man fired numerous shots at them early Sunday morning.
The officers returned fire and killed the man, according to Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan.
The man, who was known to police from previous incidents involving domestic violence, opened fire on the officers as they approached him while he was seated behind the wheel of an SUV because he was believed to have violated a domestic violence protective order.
Police have had previous run-ins with the man, and had blacked an officer’s eye in a recent contact, the chief said. The man was armed with two handguns and came out shooting, he said.
One officer was grazed along the waist by a bullet and is expected to be released later Sunday from Harrison Hospital, the chief said. The second suffered more serious wounds after being shot at least twice in the abdomen, but is expected to recover, Strachan said.”

French warplanes and helicopters may be battling jihadists in the deserts of Africa and the Middle East, but the French Air Force on the whole is in a disastrous state, with 56 per cent of all its aircraft unfit to fly at any given moment, according to a senior minister.
“If I compare the current situation … of our planes with a car, it is as if I wanted to have a car every morning that works, I would have to own four cars,” Florence Parly, the armed forces minister, said during a visit to an air base in Evreux in Normandy.
She made the remark in a scathing speech about the state of the French fleet, where aircraft availability has gone from bad to worse despite a 25 per cent boost to the maintenance budget over the past five years that brought the total to €4 billion (£3.5 billion) in 2017…
…The overall figure for aircraft ready to fly is now 44 per cent, down from 55 per cent in 2000…

Argentina fired the head of its navy Saturday in the first disciplinary action after one of its submarines vanished with 44 crew members aboard last month.
The firing of Navy Admiral Marcelo Srur by Defense Minister Oscar Aguad came as authorities continue to investigate what happened to the ARA San Juan, which disappeared Nov. 15 after reporting a fire on board.
“It was decided to remove him,” a government spokesman told Reuters.
An internal navy investigation into the incident also led to the suspension of two commanders this week.”

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Scott Air Force Base officials say a commander who was ousted from his job this week is being investigated for sexual misconduct. CBS St. Louis reports Colonel John Howard was removed from his role as commander of the 375th Air Mobility Wing on Monday.
A news release from the Illinois base says details about the investigation of Howard won’t be made public while it’s happening “to ensure the integrity of the process.” The Air Force Office of Special Investigations will head the investigation.
Howard was relieved of command by a general who said he’d lost faith in his leadership. The next day, officials announced his transfer the United States Transportation Command.
But 18th Air Force spokesman Capt. Ryan DeCamp told The (Belleville) News-Democrat Wednesday that the transfer was rescinded and Howard’s status hasn’t yet been determined.
Howard declined comment to the newspaper. Scott is about 25 miles east of St. Louis.”

Mystery has shrouded the unexplained deaths of an enormously wealthy Canadian couple, who gave away much of their fortune from a generic drug business.
The bodies of the couple, Barry and Honey Sherman, were found Friday inside their mansion in an upscale neighborhood of northern Toronto.
Aside from describing the deaths as “suspicious,” the police in Toronto offered little information. Brandon Price, a homicide detective, told reporters that investigators were not “currently seeking a suspect,” a statement he said had been made to “alleviate some of the concerns in the neighborhood.”
Emergency workers were summoned shortly before noon on Friday to the couple’s mansion in response to a 911 call, which Canadian news outlets said had been placed by a real estate agent.
The Shermans had recently listed the property for sale at nearly 7 million Canadian dollars, or about $5.4 million.”

CHRISTIANSBURG — A grand jury will decide whether John Darrell Willard should stand trial for eight images of child pornography captured among thousands of non-criminal images in the browser cache on the Roanoke man’s phone.
Willard, 49, has been making his way through Montgomery County’s court system since an April 11 trip to Blacksburg — a journey made to go dumpster-diving, Willard told police, according to testimony this week — spun into indecent exposure, public masturbation, drug and pornography charges.
In Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Monday, officers recounted how Blacksburg police were called to a report of a naked man among the trees adjoining Margaret Beeks Elementary School.
Last month in a plea agreement in General District Court, Willard pleaded not guilty to charges of indecent exposure and simulated public masturbation but admitted there was enough evidence to convict him. He was found guilty and given 12 months in jail to serve and another 12-month suspended term. Charges of possessing marijuana and obstructing justice were dropped.
This week’s hearing revolved around the remaining charges: eight counts of possessing child pornography, all stemming from a police search of Willard’s cell phone.
Blacksburg Police Det. Michael Czernicki testified that Willard’s phone had been activated about three months before his arrest. Data extracted from the phone showed a pattern of Google image searches that had turned up about 6,500 or so images, he said. These images were automatically stored in a cache by the phone.”
