A recent oversight report from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction stated that “the Taliban now controls more territory than at any time since 2001. Vicious and repeated attacks in Kabul this quarter shook confidence in the national-unity government. A year after the Coalition handed responsibility for Afghan security to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), American and British forces were compelled on several occasions to support ANDSF troops in combat against the Taliban.”

Certainty of withdrawal is more dangerous than uncertainty of the future of troop levels. When we had a small troop presence in Afghanistan during most of the Bush administration, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda didn't know exactly what the U.S. would do in the future, even if it seemed as if the U.S. was neglecting Afghanistan. But when Obama did the troop surge in Afghanistan, he also announced a withdrawal date. Now the withdrawal turned out to be slower, but it didn't really matter. The Taliban and Al-Qaeda were emboldened. And over the past few years since Obama announced that he was going to withdraw all U.S. troops by the end of 2016, Afghanistan started going downhill. It doesn't matter that the withdrawal is slower now. The Taliban know that within a few years, all U.S. troops will probably be gone. The limitations on involvement in combat operations by U.S. troops doesn't help either. Fortunately, the national-unity government seems to be stable and a reliable and trustworthy ally. This is why Obama or the next president should leave the current number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan until further notice and maybe even increase them by a few thousand. This would demonstrate strategic certainty and stability to both the Afghan government and the Taliban.

From SNL, the new way to make a bill under Obama. Since he's the one who knows all. It's old, but hey, goooooobama! Why have a three branches of government? I thought we just needed the President.
(I know it's not about Afghanistan directly, but I feel that's been his leadership style.)
