Not all hard cases are created equally. In my early years, I did some freelance photography specializing in motor sports. Mainly, following the CHAMP Car Series in the 90’s as well as some domestic Rally Car series. Hauling $10,000 lenses and other pricey photography gear to various venues across the country proved to be hard on the gear. And protecting the sensitive equipment from baggage handlers, rental car trunks as well as on-site required some durable hard cases. Back then, Pelican was what I used. Fortunately, it’s 2017 and there are other players in this market. And 5.11 Tactical is one of them. This article will concentrate on the Hard Case 940.
Competitively priced at $104.99, the feature packed Hard Case 940 has all the quality and better ergonomics than the competition. The first thing you notice when grabbing this case is the comfortable rubber over-molded handle. I can attest to the weight of professional photography gear and these handles would have been nice. Additionally, the Hard Case 940 is injection molded from lightweight, high-strength poly-propylene copolymer resins. Providing completely crush-proof load protection. Finally, a water tight rubber gasket in the lid in addition to a pressure relief valve insure protection while fully submerged.
5.11 Tactical offers a full line of firearms related hard cases. All of which surpass current Military Standards. Included in the Hard Case 940 is 3 layers of 1.25″ pull and pluck foam. Having multiple layers allows the user more flexibility to fully customize the interior for whatever purpose. Since I no longer shoot freelance motor sports photography, I use the Hard Case 940 to safely transport a small UAV. It’s the perfect size to fit a small drone, spare batteries, chargers, lens filters, controller, spare props and micro SD cards. No longer will I worry about damaging this piece of equipment when in the field or traveling.
