In Mosul, a local imam was beheaded after publicly speaking out against ISIS. He was detained for four days before the ISIS sharia court sentenced him to death by public beheading. Along with the imam’s death, the ISIS sharia court posted 1065 names of those who have been executed over the past year for aiding Kurdish forces and for standing up against ISIS. Most died in mass killings. The names were posted publicly in an attempt to intimidate the citizens of Mosul.

This imam and the 1065 people who tragically died risked everything to fight back and stand up for themselves, their families, and their communities. If more moderate Muslims would take a stand against ISIS, their courageous defiance would reduce ISIS’s legitimacy, influence, and proliferation.
