Today’s Pic of the Day features some of the best the United States Air Force has to offer: members of the 24th Special Tactics Squadron.  They are our Air Force’s only Tier 1 unit.

About the 24th STS

The 24th Special Tactics Squadron, part of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command, is a distinguished unit based at Pope Field in North Carolina. This squadron plays a crucial role in the U.S. military, especially in special operations, and has been active since 1941, albeit with some periods of inactivity and reorganization.

Background and Evolution:

Initially formed in October 1941 as the 24th Air Corps Interceptor Control Squadron in California, the unit initially focused on air defense during World War II. It underwent several transformations and rebrandings over the years, notably becoming the 24th Fighter Control Squadron and later disbanding in 1944.

In 1987, the squadron was reborn as the 1724th Combat Control Squadron, later transitioning to special tactics. It was reconstituted and merged with its former iteration in 1992, adopting its current name, the 24th Special Tactics Squadron.
