A B-17 Flying Fortress of the 339th Bombardment Squadron, 96th Bomb Group navigates over Nazi Germany in the Summer of 1944. Image enhanced by Nathan Howland from Media Drum Images.
Today we turn our eye to a photograph of a B-17 Flying Fortress of the 339th Bombardment Squadron making its way over Nazi Germany in the Summer of 1944. As you can see, the photo is quite crisp and bright. That is thanks to the expertise of graphic designer Nathan Howland. He used his considerable skills to colorize the photograph and put us right in the action.
In the photo above, we have Sgt. Harold Rogers posing with his dog “Mister,” a half chow half shepherd mix. Rogers is manning the waist gunner position of a Flying Fortress nicknamed “Un Petit Peu.”
“Un Petit Peu” translates roughly to “a little bit” in English. The B-17 was part of the 401st Bomb Group, US Army 8th Air Force, stationed at Deenethorpe in Northamptonshire, England. The 401st Bomb Group was primarily involved in strategic bombing missions over Nazi-occupied Europe, targeting industrial sites, military installations, and other strategic objectives.
Excellent archival footage of B-17s at work over Nazi Germany in 1943.
