The DroneGun Mk4 is a small pistol-shaped drone jammer, lightweight at only 3.2 kilograms, yet a “heavyweight” and “peerless globally, for its combination of size and effectiveness.”
“Boasting a sleek design and intuitive controls, the Mk4 utilizes sophisticated AI technologies that allow for a comprehensive array of autonomous functions and manual override. DroneShield has integrated its state-of-the-art military-grade sensor suite into this model providing supreme accuracy in identifying threats from other drones and airborne adversaries.”
Angus Bean, DroneShield Chief Technology Officer, shared, “DroneGun is an iconic DroneShield brand of products, from the original first-generation unit released in late 2016 to this latest offering.” Bean explained that the product line has a global heritage, including the US Department of Defense, the global intelligence community, all prominent Western militaries, and law enforcement customers.
The DroneGun Mk4 product, however, features breakthrough technologies such as “advanced waveforms to offer unparallel performance for its size and weight.” This newest edition in the DroneGun product line of DroneShield, meantime, provides “an optimal balance between size and capability,” an advanced version of the ultra-lightweight DroneGun MK3, as well as the highly successful long-range DroneGun Tactical.
Insiders say that DroneGun Mk4 is also a valuable combination of other Droneshield products, including the DroneSentry stationary multi-sensor detection system and the RfPatrol body-worn detection device. Drone enthusiasts also observe that these new products are invaluable tools for military use and surveillance operations that can open up new efficiency levels.
With DroneShield’s latest model – the DroneGun MK4 – increased capabilities just got even better. Utilizing cutting-edge AI technology and advanced avionics, this next-generation counter-UAS is poised to revolutionize how drone enthusiasts view surveillance operations in both civilian and military settings.
The DroneGun Mk4 Up Close
The DroneGun Mk4 is a tough, handheld UAS effector that offers users a compact, quick-response countermeasure capability. The device retains its predecessor’s versatility while providing improved performance, ingress protection, and serviceability.
DroneShield’s DroneGun Mk4 is highly effective against various UAS models and types. The Mk4 can interfere with the control, navigation, and video of multiple drones at the same time.
When a disruption occurs, the UAS typically responds by landing vertically on the spot or returning to the operator controller or starting point. RF disruption will also be able to interfere with any live video streaming (FPV) back to the remote controller, halting the UAS operator’s collection of video footage and intelligence.
Given the limitations of those methods, DroneShield’s C-UAS defeat capabilities do not involve any “cyber” tactics or protocol manipulation.
The company’s “defeat technologies,” DroneShield says, provide non-kinetic jamming for controlled threat management.
What are the advantages of the DroneGun Mk4?
DroneShield enumerates the benefits:
- More effective in a broader range of environmental conditions
- Increased disruption performance while maintaining compact design, ensuring effective directionality and a safe environment for the operator
- Familiar Form Factor with an improved pistol grip, safety selector switch, trigger assembly, and quick-release battery function
- Integrated electronic modules for compact application
- Ready for immediate operation; no software updates required
- Improved Ingress Protection IP67-rated design and construction provide maximum strength and protection for reliable use in harsh environments.
- Increased serviceability where protective components are easily field-serviced and replaced.
The DroneGun Mk4, specially designed to provide an optimal balance between size and capability, makes it ideal for situations where portability and ease of use are critical. This new product can be combined with other DroneShield products, such as the RfPatrol body-worn detection device or the DroneSentry stationary multi-sensor detection system.
Unlike previous DroneGun models, primarily designed for long-range use, the DroneGun Mk4 is smaller and designed for close-range use – ideal for law enforcement agencies who need to disable drones during search and rescue operations, crime scene investigations, or crowd control events.
DroneShield’s latest product can disrupt the drone’s control signal, forcing it to either land or return to its point of origin. New users point out one of the critical features of the DroneGun Mk4: its ease of use. This is achieved through a simple point-and-shoot interface that requires minimal training.
Being lightweight, it can be carried easily by security, law enforcement, and military personnel. Another key feature of the DroneGun Mk4: is its ability to disrupt Wi-Fi and GPS signals. This makes it possible for the drone gun to disable drones armed with explosives or carrying payloads that could potentially cause harm to people and property.
The DroneGun Mk4 can be used to prevent drones from entering sensitive airspace, such as military bases or airports, or used to disable drones used for illegal activities.
From its marketing pitch, the DroneShield team stresses one of the main advantages of the DroneGun Mk4, saying that it can quickly and easily disable drones without causing any physical damage to the drone itself.
With this, drones can be safely captured and analyzed, providing valuable intelligence to law enforcement agencies and the military. This is especially important when dealing with terrorist threats or other criminal activities.
DroneShield, Creator of DroneGun Mk4
“From turn-key counter-UAS (unmanned aerial system) solutions to enhancing existing system capabilities, our solutions go beyond “selling boxes,” says DroneShielf on its website.
DroneShield is a publicly listed Australian company focused on RF sensing, machine learning and AI, electronic warfare sensor fusion, MIL-SPEC manufacturing, and rapid prototyping.
The company showcases its capabilities, which are “used to protect (the) military, government, law enforcement, critical infrastructure, commercial and VIPs throughout the world.”
“Through our team of engineers, we offer customers bespoke solutions and off-the-shelf products designed to suit a variety of terrestrial, maritime, or airborne platforms.“
DroneShield CEO Oleg Vornik expressed optimism that 2023 is DroneShield’s transformative year, starting with its maiden $11 million sale order in December and an additional $11 million order from another client at the onset of the year.
“As the counter-drone industry continues to grow rapidly… DroneShield is a pioneer and global leader in this sector,” Vornik said in a statement. “Bring us your biggest challenge,” they say. “We provide solutions for your current C-UAS capability gaps. Our sensors, effectors, and AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) can be integrated into our own Command-and-Control solution or fully interoperable with third-party platforms for both Government and commercial systems.”
DroneGun Mk4 For US Government Agencies, Law Enforcement and the Military
DroneShield is fast becoming a major industry player in the drone sector, serving the military, law enforcement agencies, and the government.
“DroneShield’s specialized technology provides government agencies with an integrated counter-drone solution that allows for a layered response to UAS threats,” boasts its website.
Espionage and terrorism are natural targets for government facilities; a single intrusion could have catastrophic consequences for national security, public health, and public safety, the company pointed out.
“Various government agencies recognize the threat that UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) pose to national security. The mobility and low visibility of UAS make them useful tools in missions against government interests.”
“(UAS)can be used for physical harm, harassment, or espionage, posing a danger to classified intelligence and research, security and defense, elite technologies, physical premises, and personnel safety. Importantly, UAS are used in nefarious ways of surveillance, drug trafficking and terrorism at country borders.
DroneShield’s detection and disruption technology, supplements existing government security systems and facilities that use DroneShield’s enhanced protection for more comprehensive surveillance, allowing them to counter potential threats more effectively.
However, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has yet to authorize the DroneGun Mk4, therefore, none can be sold to the private sector.
“This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, in the United States, other than to the United States government, its agencies, and its properly delegated representatives, until such authorization is obtained,” says its disclaimer published on the DroneShield website.
Until such authorization is obtained, this device is unauthorized to be sold or leased in the US except to the US government, its agencies, and its representatives. Federal law also bans using DroneGun Mk4 in the US by other persons or entities, including, in some cases, state or local government agencies.
