Initially, when MARSOC was stood up, they rolled the majority of the Force Recon Operators into the newly created unit, and disbanded Force Recon. This left a large operational hole in the Marine Expeditionary Unit’s (MEU) capabilities.
With no Force Recon detachment and the fact that SEALs no longer float, the MEU had no direct action or VBSS capabilities. So, soon after their disbanding, Force Recon was stood back up under the Recon Battalions as Force Recon Companies.
Now everything is back to full operational capability for the MEU. Their assets now include both an Amphibious Reconnaissance Platoon and a Force Recon Platoon.
Here’s a quick video of Force Recon conducting VBSS (Visit Board Search and Seizure).
