The Philippine Air Force (PAF) recently received a significant boost to its operational capabilities with the delivery of 10 Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters from Lockheed Martin.

This milestone is part of a $620-million contract inked in 2022 between the Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) and Lockheed Martin’s Polish subsidiary, PZL Mielec.

The agreement for 32 Black Hawk helicopters under the Additional Utility Helicopters Acquisition Project demonstrates the Philippines’ commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and expanding its fleet of versatile, mission-ready aircraft.

Expanding the Fleet: A Regional Powerhouse

The delivery of these helicopters is part of a phased schedule, with five aircraft arriving in June 2024 and another five in December.

When the remaining helicopters are delivered over the next two years, the Philippines will boast a fleet of 47 S-70i Black Hawks, the largest in the world.

This remarkable achievement not only strengthens the nation’s defense posture but also highlights the global appeal and reliability of the Black Hawk platform.

Hamid Salim, vice president of Army and Air Force Systems at Sikorsky, emphasized the aircraft’s multi-mission capabilities.

“The growing Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopter fleet in the Philippines is a testament to this reliable, multi-mission aircraft that is depended on for missions such as search and rescue, humanitarian aid, and troop transport across the archipelago,” Salim noted.
