**Editor’s Note:  I’ve done this once or twice during my career. Each time you do it, the instructors are very sure to remind you to hold that weapon with your arms fully extended away from your body until you fully enter the water. Why is that? Because if you hold it close to your body, chances are that when you hit the water, the impact will drive the weapon into your jaw and bust out a few teeth. No one wants that. Always listen to your instructor. –GDM
