The Spanish government has greenlit a significant military procurement plan, solidifying its commitment to a strong future force.

The approval for the acquisition of 68 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) marks a strategic move towards modernizing the weaponry of its Eurofighter Typhoon, Boeing FA-18EF Hornet combat jets, and NASAM (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) air defense system.

Spain’s Forward-Thinking Approach

This purchase, valued at approximately 100 million euros ($107 million USD), includes the missiles, 20 captive missiles, and a logistical support package essential for maintenance and operational readiness.

Janes reported that the Spanish Council of Ministers’ decision underscores the necessity of maintaining updated and adequate missile reserves for the country’s Air and Space Force and the Spanish Army.

It aims to enhance mission capabilities, ensuring a robust response to evolving threats while enhancing existing military capabilities. This purchase also aligns with Spain’s overarching defense strategy, effectively augmenting the nation’s preparedness to meet defense obligations. In today’s global military landscape, one can never be too prepared.

This recent acquisition follows Spain’s prior approval of a batch of 92 AIM-120C-7 AMRAAMs in November 2022, as reported by Infodefensa.
