Utilizing fiscal 2022, 2023, and 2024 procurement funds allocated for the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps System Command will oversee this contracting activity.
Significantly, the majority of the work will be conducted in Virginia, showcasing a collaborative effort merging technological innovation with operational expertise.
SBNVG Features
Elbit’s SBNVG stands as a testament to advanced military-grade technology, as this helmet-mounted system provides unparalleled situational awareness by offering increased depth perception and thermal-imaging capabilities.
One of its standout features is the utilization of high-performing white phosphor image intensifier tubes, ensuring exceptional clarity and resolution of objects even in challenging conditions like smoke or low-light environments.
Its lightweight design, coupled with an extended battery life surpassing industry standards, provides maximum operational efficiency, enabling prolonged missions without compromising performance.
What sets the SBNVG apart is its Intra-Soldier Wireless (ISW) capability, facilitating networked growth potential.
This advanced feature allows seamless integration with remote sensors such as range finders and additional video feeds, empowering warfighters with enhanced situational awareness and connectivity.
Furthermore, the integration of a compass and a forward-projecting near-infrared (NIR) illuminator brings additional strategic advantages.
These features enable operations in subterranean (SubT) environments, maximizing stand-off protection and augmenting overall situational awareness for the warfighter.
In essence, the SBNVG redefines night vision technology, combining advanced imaging capabilities, extended battery life, and integrated networking features to provide unparalleled operational support and situational awareness to the modern warfighter.
Previous Deployment and Success with USMC
The SBNVG isn’t a novelty to the US military, particularly the US Marine Corps, which had previously tested and successfully utilized this technology in real battlefield conditions.
Notably, its deployment spanned various scenarios, from scanning multi-level buildings to securing positions and identifying enemy hideouts.
It proved instrumental in navigating through pitch-black sewer tunnels, showcasing adaptability and effectiveness in unconventional environments.
Integrated with the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle, the SBNVG played a pivotal role in aiding nighttime small arms engagements, as testified by Marine Cpl. Paulo Ancheta during a military exercise in 2020.
“For me, I was able to see clearly through the fog using this system,” he attested during a military exercise back in 2020. “I was able to burn through the fog with the [SBNVG] alone, but the added thermal capability improved the clarity.”
Meanwhile, Sgt. Chris Kozak also lauded the effectiveness of the SBNVG on the battlefield, highlighting the usefulness of the thermal attachment in providing enhanced capabilities for identifying specific targets and potential threats by utilizing infrared heat signatures, thereby augmenting the overall effectiveness and safety of military or security operations.
“The thermal attachment allows us to see infrared heat, which will help us [identify targets], chest bombs and other objects,” said Kozak, a Warfighting instructor at The Basic School aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.
Strategic Significance
Beyond being a technological upgrade, the procurement of Elbit Systems’ SBNVG symbolizes the Navy’s commitment to innovation for national security.
By embracing this cutting-edge technology, the Navy positions itself at the forefront of advancements, ensuring readiness and effectively addressing evolving threats.
The $500-million investment isn’t just about acquiring equipment; it signifies a pivotal stride towards reshaping the future of military operations globally.
This substantial allocation acts as a catalyst for innovation, setting new benchmarks for operational excellence and propelling defense technology into a new era.
In essence, the integration of Elbit’s SBNVG doesn’t merely elevate the Navy’s operational capabilities; it signifies a paradigm shift in defense strategies, positioning the US Navy as a leader in technological advancements and operational efficiency.
