Dogs are helpful in many aspects; one major aspect being as a loyal, dedicated partner in the line of duty. There are many dogs who are recognized as heroes in the United States military force. How many dogs are there in the service today? Well, there are approximately 2,500 military dogs in the United States and 700 overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. These dogs have been found to be approximately 98% effective and save many, many lives. Dogs have been helpful in the military throughout all of history but were never officially recognized until World War II. Dogs are trained in many aspects of the military including but not limited to bomb detection, weapon detection, tracking and attack.
