IMSC’s Exercise Sentinel Shield
Early this year, the IMSC conducted Exercise Sentinel Shield, a three-day maritime exercise in the Arabian Gulf that showcased the integration of unmanned systems and AI.
During the exercise, the Coalition Task Force (CTF) Sentinel, under the IMSC’s operational task force, collaborated with the US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Delbert D. Black (DDG-119) and two Saildrone Explorer USVs. The objective was to leverage AI and unmanned systems to enhance maritime domain awareness in Middle Eastern waters.
The systems were employed to locate and identify objects in nearby waters and relay visual depictions to watchstanders. Saildrones played a pivotal role in transmitting information on contacts of interest, facilitating coordination between unmanned and manned assets for further monitoring.
Operation Windward Stack
Meanwhile, the US 4th Fleet initiated Operation Windward Stack in September, a groundbreaking operation that integrates unmanned and manned forces, aligning with the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations’ vision of a hybrid fleet.
The operation, part of the 4th Fleet’s unmanned integration campaign, is designed to boost maritime domain awareness by detecting and quantifying targets within the Saildrones’ range.
The Saildrones, powered by solar energy, were launched from Naval Air Station Key West’s Mole Pier and Truman Harbor and will sail into the Caribbean.
US 4th Fleet’s operators and watchstanders will then conduct tests and integrate data received from the Saildrones into the fleet command center, enhancing maritime domain awareness in the US Southern Command Area of Responsibility.
Lt. Cmdr. John Clark, U.S. 4th Fleet’s Current Operations Director, explained that Operation Windward Stack’s goal is to establish seamless command and control for both manned and unmanned forces operating in the region. Plans include expanding the operation by adding more USVs, unmanned aerial vehicles, and manned maritime forces to refine the command and control infrastructure and increase naval domain awareness coverage.
