Today’s SOFREP Pic of the day focuses on the Brazilian Air Force Paraquedistas de Salvamento, which can be translated roughly as “Rescue Paratroopers.” They are an elite unit of the Brazilian Air Force that specializes in search and rescue (SAR) operations.

 

Role and Responsibilities

The primary mission of the Para-SAR is to conduct search and rescue operations within the vast Brazilian territory. Due to the large expanse of Brazil, which includes dense rainforests like the Amazon, the need for an elite SAR unit is critical.

Para-SAR operatives undergo rigorous training, making them well-prepared for diverse and challenging rescue missions. Their training includes advanced parachuting, survival techniques in various terrains, first aid, combat, and more.

History

The unit was established in the 1960s and has since been involved in numerous SAR operations both within Brazil and internationally.
