In a recent development in the sensitive geopolitical landscape surrounding Taiwan, the island’s defense ministry reported the detection of a Chinese balloon crossing the median line in the Taiwan Strait.

The Balloon Incursion

According to Taiwan’s defense ministry, a single People’s Republic of China (PRC) balloon was detected making its way across the median line at 11:52 local time (0352 GMT), approximately 101 nautical miles southwest of Keelung, a city in northern Taiwan, at an altitude of approximately 21,000 feet.

“[One] PRC (People’s Republic of China) balloon was detected at 11:52 yesterday after crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait … 101 nautical miles (187 kilometers) southwest of Keelung,” said the ministry.
